Nursery China

Pottery made specifically for children or with illustrations for and about children dates back to the 18th century. As book production for children increased so did the popularity of china for the nursery. Most of the major pottery firms introduced 'Nurseryware' pottery to appeal to young children and for use in the nursery. These were illustrated by many of the same artists as the well known book illustrators and senior decorators in pottery firms such as Poole with Harold Stabler and Dora Batty , Wedgwood's Daisy Makeig-Jones, Susie Cooper for Grays, Frederick Rhead for Shelley and Charlotte Rhead for Richardson's and Burgess and Leigh. Artists and book illustrators include Louis Wain, Heath Robinson, Hilda Cowham, John Hassall, Kate Greenaway, Beatrice Mallet and Chloe Preston, several of them working for the Paragon China company.

We try to stock a variety of nursery china mainly from the first half of the 20th Century. Maureen Batkin's lovely book "Gifts for Good Children" part 2, 1890--1990. (Richard Dennis Publications) is beautifully illustrated with a very wide range of china for children. This is a useful book for any serious collector as well as anyone thinking of buying even a few pieces.
